THREE-DIMENSIONAL THERMOMECHANICAL STRESS ANALYSIS OF ADHESIVELY BONDED COMPOSITE PLATES

ABSTRACT

Novel methodologies of three-dimensional stress analysis of bonded composite plates exposed to mechanical and thermal loads are developed. The analytical approach presented in this work is based on a 3-D mosaic model applicable for diverse types of composite structures characterized in Cartesian coordinate system. The analysis employs 3-D Ritz-type variational procedure with Bernstein basis functions applied for the displacement approximation in all three coordinate directions. The procedure allows one to directly calculate 3-D stress/strain state at any point of the mosaic structure, including interfaces, without any additional post-processing. The developed stress analysis is illustrated on the example of double-lap composite to metal joint under the effects of uniaxial mechanical extension and thermal expansion. Numerical results reveal specific features of stress variations in the joint and emphasize qualitative distinctions between the mechanical and thermal loading cases.
